01.

The Problem

A wholesale produce market runs on paper. Lots arrive and are weighed, auctioned and handed over long before anyone writes down what was owed to whom, and the commission agent reconciles a day of trade from a stack of slips in the evening.

The cost is not the bookkeeping. It is that nobody, the grower least of all, can see what a lot actually sold for, what was deducted from it, or what is still outstanding against a buyer who took delivery three days ago.

02.

What We Are Building

One system that follows a lot from arrival to settlement: intake records crates, grade and weight; the auction screen captures the rate it actually sold at; and both sides of the trade post to a ledger as it happens rather than at the end of the day.

Agents work the way they already do. The screens are built for a clerk standing in a market with one hand free, not for a desk, and the running balances are the same ones the agent would have written in a register.

03.

The Hard Parts

Settlement is where the difficulty is. A day of trade is not a list of independent sales: commission, labour, transport and previous balances all land against the same parties, and the arithmetic has to match what the agent would have reached by hand, or the system is not trusted twice.

Connectivity is the other one. A market is a poor place for a network, so capture has to hold what it recorded and reconcile it later without ever double-posting a lot that was already settled.
